Visitor Visa for Partner

Subclass 600

Visit Australia to be with Your Partner – the Right Way

If you’re in a relationship with an Australian citizen or a permanent resident and want to spend time together in Australia, the Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) may be a suitable option. Whether your partner is sponsoring you or you’re applying on your own, there are two main pathways to consider: the Tourist stream and the Sponsored Family stream.

We help couples navigate the best path for their situation—ensuring a smoother, stress-free experience.

Tourist Stream

This stream is ideal if you’re visiting Australia for a short-term stay, such as a holiday, or to spend quality time with your partner. It doesn’t require a formal sponsor, but your application must still demonstrate strong reasons to return home.

Key Features:

  • Apply from outside or inside Australia
  • Stay periods of 3, 6, or 12 months
  • Multiple or single entry options
  • No need for a sponsor
  • Must show evidence of ties to home country (e.g. job, property, family)

When it suits couples:

  • You’re in the early stages of your relationship
  • You plan to visit for a few months before deciding on a partner visa
  • You’ve visited Australia before and had good visa compliance

Sponsored Family Stream

This stream requires your Australian partner to sponsor your visit. It’s designed for people visiting family members, including de facto partners or spouses.

Key Features:

  • Your partner must submit a formal sponsorship
  • Processing times may be longer due to additional character checks on the sponsor
  • The Australian government may contact your sponsor during processing
  • Conditions may prevent applying for another visa while in Australia

When it suits couples:

  • You have strong evidence of your relationship (e.g. shared finances, long-term communication)
  • You’re waiting to apply for a partner visa
  • Your partner is happy to take on a formal sponsorship role

Which Option Is Right for You?

We’ll assess your individual situation and recommend the stream that gives you the best chance of approval. In some cases, we may even recommend a tourist visa as a first step before a partner visa, depending on your goals and visa history.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying for the wrong stream or failing to meet sponsorship rules
  • Not providing enough evidence of your genuine relationship
  • Overstaying or breaching visa conditions, which can affect future partner visa applications

How We Can Help

  • Advise you on the best stream for your circumstances
  • Prepare a strong, well-documented application
  • Help you explain your relationship in a way visa officers understand
  • Guide your sponsor through their obligations (if applicable)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit my partner in Australia on a Visitor Visa?

Yes, you can. Many couples use a Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) to spend time together in Australia before applying for a partner visa. The Tourist stream or Sponsored Family stream can both be appropriate, depending on your relationship history and goals.

What’s the difference between the Tourist stream and Sponsored Family stream?

The Tourist stream doesn’t require a formal sponsor and is generally faster to process. It’s suitable for shorter visits or early-stage relationships. The Sponsored Family stream requires your Australian partner to formally sponsor you, and it may involve more scrutiny but can strengthen your case if you’re in a longer-term relationship.

Will visiting on a tourist visa affect a future partner visa application?

Not negatively, so long as you comply with your visa conditions, including not overstaying or working illegally. In fact, time spent together in Australia can help build evidence for a future partner visa.

Can I apply for a partner visa while on a visitor visa in Australia?

Yes, in many cases you can apply for an onshore partner visa (subclass 820/801) while on a visitor visa, provided you don't have a ‘No Further Stay’ condition attached. We can advise you on timing and strategy.

What evidence do I need for a Sponsored Family stream application?

You’ll need to show a genuine relationship, including communication history, shared plans, and prior visits (if any). Your partner will also need to provide identity documents and agree to formal sponsorship obligations.

How long can I stay in Australia on a Visitor Visa to see my partner?

Stay periods are typically 3, 6, or 12 months, depending on your application and immigration history. We’ll help you choose the right option based on your goals and the strength of your application.

What if my visitor visa is refused?

Visitor visas can be refused if the Department is not satisfied you’ll return home or if they question the genuineness of your intentions. If you’ve had a visa refused, we can help assess your options and improve your next application.

Can I extend my Visitor Visa while in Australia?

You may be able to apply for another visa while in Australia, but this depends on the conditions of your current visa. Some visas include a ‘No Further Stay’ condition, which restricts further applications unless waived.

Does my partner have to be an Australian citizen to sponsor me?

No. Your partner can be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to sponsor you under the Sponsored Family stream or for a partner visa.

Should I apply for a Visitor Visa before applying for a partner visa?

In some cases, yes. A Visitor Visa can allow you to spend time together and gather stronger evidence for your future partner visa. We’ll advise based on your personal situation and migration goals.
